Volume 1 - Issue 1- Anti-Virus Protection
Greetings and Salutations to all in Cyber-space. First of all let me introduce myself. I am 50 years old, working now from home, and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider. So if you think you can't teach an old dog new tricks, try again. I Did!! So without further preamble let's get started with the first Byte in hopefully an ongoing service to all in need. You've heard it before and I still hear people lamenting " Oh Damn another virus". Well let me just say that in 10 years of being a master of nothing on the computer I still have not gotten a virus (knock on wood}. All it takes is being careful !!!!
Rule of thumb # 1 You need virus protection software installed and up- to- date data files for viruses already out there and despite thinking you are now safe it must be updated regularly and must be set up to scan your computer files on a daily basis.
Rule of thumb # 2 E-mail (such a wonderful thing} is responsible for 95% of virus infections. This means if you get email from someone you don't know and it includes an attachment Don't Open It !!!!! Even if it is from someone you know but it looks suspicious. Outlook and Outlook Express can be configured to not show email's in a preview window. They can also be setup to not accept attachments at all . Use the Help in both of these programs to set this up. If you do accept attachments use your virus software to scan the attachment. It must first be saved to a folder on your hard drive and then use your virus software to scan it before you open it.
Rule of thumb # 3 As with any software including virus protection push the buttons and learn how to update the software ( this can be setup to be done automatically but you must set it up ). Push buttons to learn how to scan folders and files manually.
Rule of thumb # 4 All software comes with a help index (Yes even Men like me ask for directions or should !!!} Use it!!! If like me you are tired of paying for software, you can download free software from reputable companies if you know where to find them. In the future after this first article I will include links for free software for numerous applications that are free and really work since I probably have them in my computer.
Remember to look at the section called Protect Your Computer in this web site to find links to free anti-virus software,
