Volume 1 - Issue 8

Greetings again to all in Cyberspace,

Sorry for the delay in creating new issues but life can really give you ups and downs. I have been busy of late and the Boss (my lovely wife) has been bothering me for the next issue and even though I have a writers block I'll try and grind out some tecno goodies for you !!

The biggest concern I have come across has been the increase in spyware taking over peoples computers. I have had a number of computers in my shop for this reason. Spyware or Adware as it is commonly known can do a bunch of things to your computer, from locking you out of your browser to crashing your computer because of a lack of resources (memory). In all cases your computer can be repaired simply by downloading and running a few programs that I have mentioned before. Visit the section called Protect Your Computer on this web site and look for the links to Spyware Removal. Download the program to a folder of your choice so that you can install it later and still have an executable copy on your hard drive.

If you have a browser hijacker there is a lot of articles on the net about removal of the specific one you may have.

You can find a lot out about what is running in your computer by running a program in all Windows operating systems called msconfig.exe and it can be started by using the run command line found when you put your cursor on the Start. You will see Run, click it and a window will open and in the command line type msconfig, then click OK . A window will open with tabs at the top, click the one called start up . It will show you whats running in the background. If you write down what they say you can type them into a search bar such as Google and you can find out what they are and if there are things in the startup which are bad such as trojans you can disable them by removing the check mark and then clicking Apply at the bottom and restarting your computer and they will be disabled. Note in Windows XP opening the Task Manager will also show you what applications and processes are running.Control, ALT and Delete is typed in. this will start the task manager.

A lot of people say that it sounds like a lot to do to keep your computer safe. Unfortunately this is true and these things must be done on a regular basis to keep your investment ( your computer ) safe. I have had people also say if I buy a brand new computer as compared to my old one I won't have these problems because it is up to date hardware.Wrong!!! Spyware and viruses are software related so even if you have a 1 day old computer if you don't have protection you can get caught. No Glove ! No Love ! is also true with computers. You must have protection.
