I would also like to explain why I believe free is best. Software companies are in business to make money, this is the way of things. You know as well as I that there are a lot of people who do not have a lot of money, but they are fortunate enough to have a computer. It may not be new but it works and allows some shut-ins to see what is happening in the world today. In order to keep their computer safe ( and the investment to own one ) certain programs need to be installed. Anti-virus software would rank as most important. If this software is made by a major company you can bet it will cost a significant sum of money, (research and program development cost money ). Software of this type is built in basically two parts, the first being the search engine part of the program which scans your computer ( search engine ), performs updates, and repairs your computer in the event you catch a virus.
The second part of the program is the data engine which is a catalogue of all the viruses in the wild and the fixes for them. When you purchase software from the big companies they neglect to tell you that the important part of the program mentioned earlier (search engine and program functions ) can only be updated for one year from the purchase date. The update part of the program can be continued long after, but you are at risk because the search engine part isn't updated to search for new types of viruses, Of course you can renew this software online ( for a fee of course ) which carries you for another year and also entitles you to Technical Support if you need it.
I just wanted to point that out so you knew what you were getting when you purchase software. When you can get free software from a company it is possible they make corporate software which provides their profit and they believe that private home users need not burden themselves with more expenses to operate and keep their computer safe for them and everyone else. I think you should take advantage of this. Of course these companies will also have versions which can be purchased, which again give you more functionality and tech support, but only if you want it !
